Targeted Temperature Management After Cardiac Arrest: 2026 Updates

Program Description:

This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of post–cardiac arrest care with a focus on targeted temperature management (TTM). Led by Dr. Ben Abella, an expert in emergency medicine and resuscitation science, the course explores the pathophysiology of post–cardiac arrest syndrome, the importance of temperature control, and the evolving clinical evidence guiding TTM use.

Participants will review American Heart Association (AHA) guideline updates, key clinical trials comparing temperature strategies, and practical considerations for implementing TTM in hospital settings. Emphasis is placed on individualized patient care, timing of intervention, and prevention of fever to optimize neurological outcomes.

Educational Objectives:

  • Explain the pathophysiology of post–cardiac arrest syndrome and impact of TTM.
  • Describe the role of targeted temperature management (TTM)in improving neurological and survival outcomes after cardiac arrest.
  • Interpret current AHA guideline recommendationsfor temperature control in post–cardiac arrest patients, including appropriate patient selection.
  • Compare evidence supporting different temperature targets (e.g., 33°C vs. 36°C)and identify patient populations that may benefit from deeper cooling.
  • Apply clinical decision-making strategiesregarding timing, duration, and method of TTM implementation in both out-of-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest scenarios.
